<\/p>\n
The funding supports the second phase of the Project to Strengthen Electrical System Infrastructure and Electricity Access (PROSER II), which has a total cost of about $253 million (\u20ac234.56 million). The initiative is being co-financed by the Islamic Development Bank, contributing roughly $91 million (\u20ac83.96 million), alongside $52 million (\u20ac47.46 million) from the Ivorian government.<\/p>\n

PROSER II aims to extend electricity to more than 107 000 households and electrify 244 rural localities across 18 regions. The project also includes upgrades and rehabilitation of electricity distribution networks in Greater Abidjan, several interior regions and 12 departmental capitals, improving the reliability and quality of supply.<\/p>\n

In addition to expanding access, the programme will install more than 74 000 energy-efficient LED streetlights, helping to enhance public safety, reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

AfDB Director-General for West Africa Lamin Barrow said the project marks an important step in strengthening C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s electricity system and improving service delivery. Barrow said the initiative is expected to support local economic activity while improving living conditions for households in targeted areas.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The project aligns with C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s goal of achieving universal electricity access by 2030, particularly in rural and fast-growing urban areas. It is also linked to broader national development priorities, including the country\u2019s National Development Plan for 2026\u20132030 and its National Energy Compact.<\/p>\n

Beyond infrastructure investment, PROSER II includes social and institutional components aimed at strengthening the electricity sector. These include initiatives to support youth employment, promote women\u2019s economic participation and build institutional capacity in planning, implementation and monitoring within the energy sector.<\/p>\n

The new phase builds on the success of PROSER I, approved in 2020, which exceeded initial targets by electrifying more than 1 500 localities and expanding distribution networks across the country.<\/p>\n

The AfDB said the programme reflects its broader strategy to support climate-resilient infrastructure and inclusive growth, while improving access to essential services such as electricity across the continent.<\/p>\n
