{"id":36702,"date":"2026-06-10T14:38:55","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T12:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=36702"},"modified":"2026-07-11T10:30:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T08:30:14","slug":"high-rates-of-alcohol-use-among-young-women-study","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/high-rates-of-alcohol-use-among-young-women-study\/","title":{"rendered":"High rates of alcohol use among young women: Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: left;\">A new study by the South African (SA) University of Cape Town (UCT) has found high levels of alcohol consumption among adolescent girls and young women, particularly in urban areas.<\/div>\n<p>The study was conducted across 10 high HIV-risk districts among young women aged 15 to 24.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Researchers found that nearly one in three young women surveyed consumed alcohol, with hazardous and binge drinking patterns recorded as common.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The findings are higher than those reported in previous studies covering the same age group.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Senior research officer at UCT Doctor Mpho Tlali says urban environments played a significant role in driving the trend.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThese urban areas have much higher rates of alcohol consumption than perhaps the more rural areas. What\u2019s clear from research is that these are areas where access to alcohol is quite ubiquitous. There\u2019s high marketing and advertisements and these are often targeted at young people.
