President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi met with President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem over the weekend, in Somaliland\u2019s first official state visit to Israel since recognition in late 2025. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations, including cooperation on political, economic and security matters.<\/p>\n

The visit follows the appointment of Israel\u2019s first Ambassador to Somaliland, with Somaliland reciprocating by naming its own envoy, signalling a formalisation of diplomatic ties.<\/p>\n

Advocate Sipho Mantula, Researcher at the Thabo Mbeki School of Public and International Affairs, said the visit reflects both opportunity and geopolitical complexity. \u201cThis visit\u2026 has also a complexity of contradictions\u2026 engaging on political, economic and security issues\u2026 considering that there is still a conflict between Israel and Palestine,\u201d Mantula said.<\/p>\n

Mantula noted that Somaliland\u2019s status remains contested within the African Union (AU) and United Nations, and the visit risks intensifying tensions.<\/p>\n

Neighbouring countries such as Ethiopia and Djibouti are expected to closely monitor developments, given potential implications for regional politics. \u201cThey will be concerned\u2026 the immediate neighbours will be the first to catch that concern and that impact,\u201d Mantula said.<\/p>\n

Mantula said Somaliland\u2019s pursuit of international recognition is a key driver behind the engagement. \u201cThis visit becomes important for Somaliland\u2026 in terms of recognition,\u201d Mantula said.<\/p>\n

The AU is also likely to assess the implications of the move, particularly in light of broader tensions involving Israel. \u201cFor me, it is the issue of how the AU will look at this posture\u2026 what will be its implications,\u201d Mantula said.<\/p>\n

Security considerations are expected to feature prominently, especially given the participation of defence officials in the delegation and ongoing instability in the Horn of Africa. \u201cIt will have an impact\u2026 we cannot ignore the influence of Israel\u2026 within the Horn of Africa,\u201d Mantula said.<\/p>\n

Despite concerns, Mantula said Somaliland stands to gain from closer cooperation with Israel in key sectors. \u201cThey will benefit\u2026 in technology\u2026 health\u2026 education,\u201d Mantula said.<\/p>\n
