{"id":37166,"date":"2026-06-15T15:56:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T13:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=37166"},"modified":"2026-06-15T15:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T13:56:12","slug":"ghana-coach-enters-record-books-at-his-fifth-world-cup-in-row","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/ghana-coach-enters-record-books-at-his-fifth-world-cup-in-row\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana coach enters record books at his fifth World Cup in row"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Carlos Queiroz is still one tournament short of matching the record for coaching at the World Cup, but the 73-year-old will still enter the record books this week.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Queiroz takes charge \u200bof Ghana as they begin their Group L campaign against Panama in Toronto on Wednesday and \u200ccontinues a run that began with Portugal in 2010 and saw him also coach Iran at three successive World Cups in 2014, 2018, and 2022.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">The run matches the record five tournaments in a row that Bora Milutinovi\u0107 set from \u200b1986 to 2002 when he was at the helm of five different national teams.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Brazilian Carlos Alberto \u200bParreira has the record number of World Cup appearances as a coach with \u2060six, but not successively.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Queiroz was not scheduled to go to the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the \u200bUnited States until April when Ghana appointed him in place of Otto Addo, fired in March after a \u200bseries of disappointing friendly results.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Before the sudden call from the Ghanaians, it looked as if his long career, including coaching Real Madrid and working as Alex Ferguson\u2019s Assistant at Manchester United, had ended, with his last job having been in \u200bOman, the eighth different country whose national team he had taken charge of.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">His cerebral and technical approach \u200bcontrasts with a bellicose demeanour on the side of the pitch, where he can sometimes look like a pantomime \u200cvillain, although \u2060others have found him uninspiring. &#8220;I felt he had the personality of a dead fly when I worked with him,\u201d said former Manchester United captain Roy Keane.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Queiroz is hailed in his native Portugal as a trendsetter, laying the foundation for their prodigious youth output.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;In a country where greatness is so often measured by \u200bthe result of the next \u200bmatch, Queiroz deserves to \u2060be remembered for something deeper &#8211; the construction of a culture that still endures of bringing the knowledge of universities to the pitch and, thus, contributing to \u200bPortugal being recognised as a training ground for elite footballers,&#8221; the daily \u200bsports newspaper A\u2019Bola \u2060commented last month.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">He made his name when leading Portugal to back-to-back U-20 World Cup titles in 1989 and 1991, and bringing on a generation of outstanding footballers like Lu\u00eds Figo, Paulo Sousa, and Jo\u00e3o Pinto, and \u2060is now \u200blooking to crown a storied career by taking Ghana as \u200bfar as he can at the World Cup.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\n&#8220;I am prepared for this,&#8221;
