Communications and Media Lead at Fight Inequality Alliance, Ed Pomfret, said the scale of the wealth accumulation reflects structural issues within the global economy. \u201cI had to sit and take a moment with the number\u2026 our brains aren\u2019t really built for it,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

Pomfret said the scale of Musk\u2019s wealth highlights extreme disparities, noting that such fortunes are difficult to contextualise. \u201cIf you spend $1 million every single day, it would take you literally 2 700 years to spend that trillion,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

Pomfret argued that the growth in Musk\u2019s wealth is tied to broader systems of public support and financial markets rather than individual innovation alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cMusk\u2019s trillion doesn\u2019t materialise from genius. It\u2019s extracted from the systems that workers built, but government subsidised,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n
He added that such wealth accumulation reflects wider global trends identified in inequality research. \u201cThis destroys the myth that extreme wealth is a reward for talent and hard work,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

Pomfret said much of global billionaire wealth is linked to inheritance, monopoly power or political connections, which he described as a form of \u201ccaptured power\u201d. \u201cMusk isn\u2019t really an outlier\u2026 he\u2019s just the one who scaled the pyramid the furthest,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

The development has also raised concerns about the concentration of influence in the hands of a single individual. \u201cWhen one unelected person controls rockets, satellites, a platform that shapes what billions read, that\u2019s not entrepreneurship, that\u2019s power,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

Pomfret warned that such concentration poses risks to accountability and governance, particularly when private power intersects with public systems. \u201cNo one voted for this\u2026 there\u2019s no mandate and no accountability,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

The Fight Inequality Alliance has linked the rise in extreme wealth to global disparities in public services and development outcomes. \u201cWhen a clinic has no medicine\u2026 that\u2019s not about scarcity\u2026 the money exists,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

Pomfret said developing countries, particularly in Africa, Asia and Latin America, face rising debt burdens and funding constraints that mirror the same global financial structures that enable vast wealth accumulation. It\u2019s the same system\u2026 that forces African governments to borrow\u2026 and spend more servicing that debt than on health,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

Despite the scale of inequality, Pomfret said growing public awareness and activism suggest increasing pressure for reform. \u201cPeople around the world can feel that this is unjust,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n

Pomfret pointed to global movements advocating for wealth taxes, debt relief and economic restructuring as evidence of rising demands for change. \u201cThe 1% have control\u2026 but the 99% have the majority, the moral case,\u201d Pomfret said.<\/p>\n
