{"id":37350,"date":"2026-06-17T11:52:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T09:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=37350"},"modified":"2026-06-17T11:52:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T09:52:05","slug":"sa-inflation-rises-less-than-expected-in-may","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-inflation-rises-less-than-expected-in-may\/","title":{"rendered":"SA inflation rises less than expected in May"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">South Africa&#8217;s (SA) headline consumer \u200cinflation quickened less than expected in May, rising to 4.5% year on year from 4.0% \u200bin April, data from the \u200bstatistics agency showed, opens new tab on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">In month-on-month terms \u2060inflation was at 0.7% in \u200bMay, compared with 1.1% in April.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Economists \u200bpolled by Reuters had expected annual inflation would accelerate to 4.7%, as the impact \u200bof the United States (US)Israel war against \u200bIran fed through into fuel and food prices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">As \u200ca \u2060net fuel importer, SA is heavily exposed to the spike in global energy prices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">SA&#8217;s Central \u200bbank targets \u200binflation \u2060of 3%, with a 1%-point tolerance band \u200beither side.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">At its last monetary \u200bpolicy \u2060meeting in May it raised its main lending rate for the first \u2060time \u200bin three years.
