could unlock over 100 000 jobs in Malawi: World Bank

A new Country Private Sector Diagnostic released by the World Bank Group identifies commercial mining, nature-based tourism and mango production as high-potential sectors capable of driving economic transformation.

The report outlines how Malawi’s natural assets, including fertile agricultural conditions, mineral resources and Lake Malawi, provide a strong foundation for expanding private sector activity and moving toward higher productivity, export-driven growth.

World Bank Division Director for Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, Firas Raad, said the sectors present viable opportunities for investment and job creation. “The three subsectors represent commercially viable opportunities to attract increased investment and create jobs in Malawi in the short to medium term,” Raad said.

Raad added that sustained progress will require broader reforms and capacity building. “Further increases in investment will require complementary reforms and capacity building over the coming years,” Raad said.

The report recommends a range of policy changes to support growth, including improving access to land for investors, strengthening transport and air connectivity, and enhancing regulatory frameworks to reduce uncertainty.

It also highlights the need to improve tourism infrastructure and develop concession models in natural areas to attract private investment and improve visitor experiences.

A key component of the reform agenda is strengthening collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders.

To support this, authorities have launched a Private–Public Dialogue Forum (PPDF), aimed at creating a structured platform for engagement and consultation.

Officials say the forum will help ensure that private sector input is incorporated into policymaking while improving transparency and accountability in reform implementation.

The PPDF is also expected to reduce regulatory uncertainty by providing a mechanism for addressing investor concerns and improving predictability in the business environment.

International Finance Corporation Division Director for Eastern Africa Mary Porter Peschka said Malawi is at a critical point for economic transformation. “Malawi has the assets, the entrepreneurial energy, and the ambition to attract significantly greater private investment,” Peschka said.

Peschka said targeted reforms could unlock new industries and accelerate inclusive growth. “The country stands at an inflexion point where targeted reforms can unlock new industries, create jobs, and expand exports,” Peschka said.

–WorldBank/ChannelAfrica–

[78,44
post-37388","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-featured","news-type-finance","entry
Malawi
