The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) has raised serious concerns over escalating tensions surrounding undocumented immigration, claiming that the current surge in anti-immigrant sentiment is being politically orchestrated.<\/p>\n

The trade union federation has urged the working class to reject attempts to divide communities along national, ethnic, or tribal lines. While acknowledging widespread public frustration over soaring unemployment, crime, and collapsing public infrastructure, FEDUSA maintained that migrants and undocumented foreign nationals are being used as scapegoats for deeper systemic failures.<\/p>\n

Instead, the federation laid the blame squarely at the doorstep of the state, citing corruption, weak border management, and severe institutional capacity constraints.<\/p>\n

FEDUSA Deputy General Secretary, Ashley Benjamin, pointed out that government inefficiency is the root driver of the current crisis.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“We are saying to the government that they must accept responsibility for this crisis that they created to a large extent,” Benjamin said. “Weak border management or porous borders is one of the biggest contributors that we have in this crisis of illegal immigrants in our country, alongside Home Affairs inefficiencies.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Benjamin further highlighted critical regulatory gaps in the labour market, pointing out that the Department of Employment and Labour is drastically under-resourced.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“The department only has 2 300 permanent inspectors dealing with millions of workers and hundreds of thousands of workplaces to be inspected. So, government must govern, and they must ensure that South Africans are protected and that our country’s borders are protected,” he added.<\/p>\n
