The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on \u200bThursday it had concluded a staff visit \u200cto Malawi where it held constructive discussions with authorities on the economy and policy priorities, although no deal was \u200breached on new lending.<\/p>\n

“Discussions will continue on \u200bthe package of policies and reforms that \u2060could be supported under an Extended Credit Facility \u200barrangement,” the Fund said in a statement.<\/p>\n

An IMF staff \u200bmission visited Malawi from June 9 to 18 for talks on a new arrangement aimed at helping the country \u200brecover from a severe economic crisis characterised by \u200bdouble-digit inflation and crippling foreign-currency shortages.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The discussions were expected to \u200cfocus \u2060on fiscal discipline, debt sustainability and foreign exchange management, among other things.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Malawi’s last IMF programme lapsed in May last year because it did not complete a \u200breview within \u200b18 months \u2060of its approval, meaning it received only an initial disbursement of $35 million.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Southern \u200bAfrican nation’s economic difficulties include a \u200bhigh \u2060debt burden and declining donor funding.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha said in February that public debt had reached unsustainable \u2060levels \u200babove 90% of gross domestic \u200bproduct.<\/p>\n
