{"id":37508,"date":"2026-06-19T11:02:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T09:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=37508"},"modified":"2026-06-19T17:17:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T15:17:17","slug":"african-lawmakers-back-push-for-tougher-anti-lgbt-laws-after-ghana-conference","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/african-lawmakers-back-push-for-tougher-anti-lgbt-laws-after-ghana-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"African lawmakers back push for tougher anti-LGBT laws after Ghana conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Lawmakers from more than a dozen African countries have pledged to push new bills restricting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) rights, after a conference in Ghana that brought together self-described &#8220;pro-family&#8221; activists from \u200bacross Africa and Europe, participants said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family Values and Sovereignty took place in Accra on June 3 to 6, a week after Ghana&#8217;s parliament passed one \u200cof the continent&#8217;s toughest anti-LGBT measures, a bill criminalising LGBT promotion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The gathering reflects a broader shift toward more restrictive laws targeting LGBT people in parts of Africa that participants said was being encouraged by conservative figures in the United States (US) and Europe and has gained new momentum since Donald Trump returned to the White House.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Some attendees said they saw an opportunity to promote their agendas under US president Donald Trump, whose administration, unlike those of Barack Obama and Joe Biden , does not promote \u200bLGBT rights as part of its foreign policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;When you return to your respective capitals, let the resolutions we adopt here not gather dust in the archives of our secretariats.
