The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) confirmed that all voting stations opened at 08:00 local time as part of the nationwide voter registration weekend.<\/p>\n

In the Northern Cape, IEC Spokesperson Elkin Topkin said preparations were completed, including the distribution of essential registration materials. We know that there have been questions in the past about the optimal functioning of the devices,\u201d Topkin said.<\/p>\n

Topkin said the voter registration devices went under maintenance to ensure reliability during the registration process. \u201cThey have undergone the necessary maintenance to make sure they are fit for purpose, enabling real-time verification and accurate capturing of voter details,\u201d Topkin said.<\/p>\n

Topkin said the devices are central to the modernisation of voter registration, improving efficiency and data accuracy. The IEC has encouraged eligible citizens to take part in the registration process, which runs over the weekend.<\/p>\n

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to participate in the registration drive in the Gauteng province, where he will visit communities in the east of Johannesburg. Ramaphosa is scheduled to begin engagements in KwaThema township before concluding the programme in Katlehong township.<\/p>\n

The activities form part of broader efforts by political parties to mobilise voters ahead of the November polls. The IEC has designated the weekend as an opportunity for South Africans to register for the first time or update their registration details, including voting districts.<\/p>\n

Officials say the registration process is a critical step in ensuring broad participation in the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n
