The country has more than 58 million hectares of arable land and favourable climatic conditions, yet spends around $3 billion annually on food imports due to low productivity levels.

The initiative seeks to address these gaps by strengthening the entire agricultural value chain. Planned interventions include boosting agro-processing, improving logistics and expanding access to agricultural services.

Officials say these measures will help reduce post-harvest losses, improve productivity and connect farmers more effectively to markets. The programme is also expected to create new opportunities for young people and women, particularly through entrepreneurship and agribusiness development.

A key component of the Compact is creating an enabling environment for private investment. This includes improving access to finance, inputs and technology, while enhancing partnerships between farmers, financial institutions and agribusiness firms.

The initiative also aims to advance reforms in land use, water management, food safety and the broader regulatory environment to support sustainable agricultural growth.

Angola’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister, Isaac dos Anjos, said the success of the programme depends on stronger collaboration across sectors. “The transformation of Angolan agriculture will depend on mobilising entrepreneurs, investors and institutions to modernise the sector,” dos Anjos said.

Beyond productivity gains, the Compact also prioritises resilience to climate shocks. Measures include better water management and more robust supply chains to help farmers cope with droughts, floods and other environmental risks.

World Bank Division Director Albert Zeufack said the initiative aims to unlock Angola’s potential through coordinated action. “AgriConnect is about connecting farmers to markets, technology and finance, and creating real opportunities,” Zeufack said.

–WorldBank/ChannelAfrica–

[44
post-37996","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-finance","entry
Angola and the World Bank Group have unveiled a new national initiative aimed at transforming the country’s agricultural sector, with a strong focus on job creation, food security and private investment.

Angola and the World Bank Group have unveiled a new national initiative aimed at transforming the country’s agricultural sector, with a strong focus on job creation, food security and private investment.
["GET
