{"id":38246,"date":"2026-06-28T13:14:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T11:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=38246"},"modified":"2026-06-28T13:14:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T11:14:17","slug":"ugandas-military-chief-orders-shutdown-of-two-major-media-outlets","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/ugandas-military-chief-orders-shutdown-of-two-major-media-outlets\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda&#8217;s Military Chief orders shutdown of two major media outlets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Uganda&#8217;s Military Chief, who is also the President&#8217;s son, said this Sunday he had ordered the closure of two leading media outlets, declaring that he did &#8220;not believe in \u200ca free press&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Muhoozi Kainerugaba said the <em>Daily Monitor<\/em>,\u00a0Uganda&#8217;s largest independent daily newspaper, and <em>NTV\u00a0<\/em>Uganda, one of the country&#8217;s largest private broadcasters, would &#8220;not re-open without my permission&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Uganda, I do not believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres \u2060of the revolution,&#8221; Kainerugaba wrote in a series of posts on the X platform.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He did not give specific reasons for closing the media outlets, both of which are owned by Nation Media Group (NMG), a media conglomerate headquartered in Kenya and listed on the Nairobi stock exchange.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Daily Monitor<\/em> reported on Sunday that military personnel had been deployed at NMG&#8217;s premises in the capital, Kampala, and that staff were being prevented \u200cfrom \u2060leaving or entering the premises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>NTV\u00a0<\/em>Uganda and other <em>NMG TV\u00a0<\/em>and radio broadcasters in the country were all down as of Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ugandan government Spokesperson Alan Kasujja did not immediately respond to a <em>Reuters<\/em> request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Susan Nsibirwa, \u2060Managing Director for NMG in Uganda, said she did not have an immediate comment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kainerugaba, who has been touted as a possible successor to his ageing father, \u2060President Yoweri Museveni, is well known for his controversial social media posts including threats to behead the leading opposition leader Bobi Wine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, \u2060the government of Museveni, who has ruled the country since 1986, shut down the <em>Daily Monitor<\/em>\u00a0for 10 days over reports regarding his succession.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Reuters&#8211;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":38247,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"news-type":[78,26],"class_list":["post-38246","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-featured","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"Uganda's Military Chief, who is also the President's son, said this Sunday he had ordered the closure of two leading media outlets","published_date":"2026-06-28 12:58:23","news_description":"Uganda's Military Chief, who is also the President's son, said this Sunday he had ordered the closure of two leading media outlets","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/38246","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/38246\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":38248,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/38246\/revisions\/38248"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/38247"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=38246"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=38246"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
