German prosecutors arrested a German-Rwandan national on suspicion of being an accomplice to \u200bgenocide and 25 counts of murder during \u200cthe 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, they said in a statement this Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The suspect, identified only \u200bas Innocent S under German privacy rules, \u200bis accused of ordering the deaths of 25 \u2060Tutsis on five separate occasions while serving \u200bas an assistant to the mayor of Kayove \u200bin northwestern Rwanda.<\/p>\n
In one instance, the suspect is accused of personally taking part in the killing by stabbing a \u200bvictim in the chest with a knife, the \u200bprosecutors said.<\/p>\n
The suspect, who was arrested in the central German \u200cstate \u2060of Hesse, also used his position to incite the extermination of Tutsis in his town and had death lists drawn up, they added.<\/p>\n
Germany has \u200bprosecuted several \u200bsuspects linked \u2060to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda under the principle of universal jurisdiction, \u200bwhich allows courts to try certain \u200bgrave international \u2060crimes regardless of where they were committed.<\/p>\n
More than 800 000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were systematically massacred \u2060in \u200bthe East African nation by \u200bHutu extremists over a roughly 100-day period from April to July \u200b1994.<\/p>\n
