Ghana has postponed high-level bilateral talks with South Africa (SA), originally scheduled for August, due to a surge in anti-migrant violence across SA cities.<\/p>\n

Ghanaian government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed the decision on Tuesday, stating that the regional tensions would have inevitably overshadowed the Bi-National Commission meetings, which were set to be co-chaired by President John Dramani Mahama and his SA counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n

The postponement follows a wave of anti-immigrant protests in SA that have increasingly escalated into violent attacks and the looting of foreign-owned shops. Tensions reached a boiling point ahead of a June 30 “deadline” set by a SA anti-migrant group demanding undocumented foreigners leave the country, prompting Accra to repatriate hundreds of its citizens.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic relations have been further strained by the killing of a Ghanaian national in Cape Town. While Ghana’s Foreign Ministry asserts the citizen was shot dead during anti-immigrant demonstrations on June 30, SA police have disputed the motive, claiming the death occurred a day earlier and was linked to local extortion syndicates rather than xenophobia.<\/p>\n

SA’s Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya stated that Johannesburg only learned of the deferral when attempting to finalise arrangements but noted that both nations will continue using diplomatic channels to reschedule the summit once conditions stabilise.<\/p>\n
