Lavrov held talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and officials from the African Union (AU), with discussions expected to focus on bilateral cooperation, regional security, trade and preparations for future Russia-Africa engagements.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Channel Africa on Wednesday, Political Analyst Dr Shingai Mangiza Mutiza said the visit appears to be closely linked to preparations for the next Russia-Africa Summit expected later this year.<\/p>\n

Mutiza said the tour is likely aimed at laying the groundwork for discussions at the summit, including consultations with key African partners on priorities and areas of cooperation. \u201cOn the face of it, it appears rather curious that you have an Africa tour where the full itinerary has not been publicised,\u201d said Mutiza.<\/p>\n

Mutiza suggested that Moscow\u2019s decision to keep details of the trip relatively low profile could be linked to security considerations as well as diplomatic strategy.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia remains one of Russia\u2019s most important partners on the continent, with relations between the two countries dating back decades. Addis Ababa is also home to the AU headquarters, making it a significant stop for any major diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening relations with African governments and institutions.<\/p>\n

Mutiza noted that engagement with African countries has become increasingly important for Russia as global geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve.<\/p>\n
