{"id":39445,"date":"2026-07-13T15:07:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T13:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=39445"},"modified":"2026-07-13T15:42:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T13:42:48","slug":"drcs-ebola-outbreak-spreads-to-two-more-provinces","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/drcs-ebola-outbreak-spreads-to-two-more-provinces\/","title":{"rendered":"DRC&#8217;s Ebola outbreak spreads to two more provinces"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has spread to two more \u200bnortheastern provinces, Haut-Uele and Tshopo, the country&#8217;s public health institute \u200csaid in its latest report.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The number of confirmed Ebola cases across the country rose to 1 926, including 702 deaths, official data showed late on Sunday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Four cases \u200bwere recorded in Tshopo, including two deaths, with one death \u200bconfirmed in Haut-Uele, as of Saturday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The latest Ebola outbreak, DRC&#8217;s \u206017th, was declared on May 15 and has been largely concentrated in \u200bIturi province, with cases also<\/div>\n<div>reported in North Kivu and South Kivu \u200bprovinces.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The often fatal viral disease spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from infected people or animals and causes symptoms that can include high fever, vomiting and \u200binternal and external bleeding.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>Reuters<\/em> reported in late June that Congolese health authorities had \u200bstarted tracing people potentially exposed to Ebola in Tshopo and Haut-Uele, but until now \u200cthe \u2060two provinces had not been included in the government&#8217;s daily reports.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Although current investigations suggest that all cases detected in these two provinces are primarily imported from Niania in Ituri, it is necessary and appropriate, to consider \u200bthese two provinces \u200bas an epidemic \u2060zone,&#8221; the National Institute of Public Health said in its report dated July 11.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tshopo&#8217;s Provincial capital is Kisangani, \u200bone of Congo&#8217;s largest cities.
