A South African (SA) court has ruled in favour of extraditing prominent Zimbabwean political activist Wellington Masiwa, triggering intense debate across the region regarding asylum protections and judicial independence.<\/p>\n

Known widely by his alias, Comrade Nyokayemabhunu, Masiwa has been a vociferous critic of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s efforts to extend his presidential term to 2030 beyond existing constitutional limits.<\/p>\n

While Zimbabwean authorities maintain that his extradition is strictly related to fraud charges, Masiwa and his supporters adamantly argue that the case is entirely politically motivated.<\/p>\n

Speaking from the holding cells in an exclusive interview with Channel Africa, Masiwa expressed deep fears for his safety if he is sent back. “I am the target. I am going to be killed with these people,” he warned, alleging that his opposition to constitutional amendments has made him a marked man. He claimed to have already survived two assassination attempts while residing in SA, where he sought refuge following Zimbabwe’s 2017 military coup.<\/p>\n

The ruling has sent shockwaves through the southern African activist community. Masiwa suggested that political elite solidarity is compromising regional refugee protections, noting that SA\u2019s ruling party and Zimbabwe\u2019s ZANU-PF operate as “sister parties.” He claimed that the court’s decision proves that regional institutions are failing to protect dissident voices, adding that SA and Zimbabwe are effectively “dancing to the same tune.”<\/p>\n

Masiwa’s legal team has 15 days to act, and they intend to appeal the judgment at the High Court. Despite the looming threat of repatriation, Masiwa urged Zimbabweans and the broader African community to continue demanding accountability, democracy, and the rule of law. “People must stand in what they believe in,” he urged. “Money is not going to buy the will of the people.”<\/p>\n
