South Africa\u2019s (SA) healthcare landscape is bracing for a major disruption after the local health regulator gave the green light to a much cheaper generic version of the weight-loss and diabetes drug, semaglutide.<\/p>\n

The approval was granted to Indian pharmaceutical giant Sun Pharma, which has confirmed that its weekly, pre-filled multidose injectable pen will hit SA shelves in the coming days. The treatment is set to launch in two strengths; 2mg and 4mg.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This marks Sun Pharma\u2019s second major regulatory victory for the drug, following a successful rollout in India. A wave of affordable alternatives was triggered back in March when the patent held by Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk expired. Since then, Indian manufacturers have flooded the market with generic versions, cutting consumer costs by as much as 80% compared to the original brand-name price point.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The arrival of this generic alternative sets up a fierce commercial battle in SA. Sun Pharma will go head-to-head with premium, high-demand treatments already dominant on the local market, including Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Novo Nordisk’s own flagship product, Ozempic.<\/p>\n
