{"id":39905,"date":"2026-07-17T20:31:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T18:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=39905"},"modified":"2026-07-17T20:31:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T18:31:41","slug":"un-sanctions-armed-groups-leaders-in-eastern-drc","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/un-sanctions-armed-groups-leaders-in-eastern-drc\/","title":{"rendered":"UN sanctions armed groups&#8217; leaders in eastern DRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations (UN) Security Council has imposed sanctions on leaders of armed groups operating in eastern Democratic Republic of the \u200cCongo (DRC) including Rwandan-backed AFC\/M23 \u200crebels and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), which fights alongside the Congolese army.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The conflict in eastern DRC is rooted in the fallout from neighbouring Rwanda&#8217;s 1994 genocide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fighting in \u2060eastern DRC intensified last year when the AFC\/M23 rebel group, which the UN and Western governments say is backed by Rwanda, seized large swathes of eastern Congo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda denies backing the rebels.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The UN Security Council said on Thursday a committee that oversees an arms embargo on DRC added six individuals and two entities to its sanctions list.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Among them were Corneille Nangaa, leader of the AFC rebel alliance that also includes M23, John Imani Nzenze, M23 Chief of Intelligence, and Gustave Kubwayo, an FDLR Commander.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nzenze and Kubwayo were sanctioned last month by the United States which \u2060accused them of driving the conflict in the east despite mediation efforts by Washington.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UN sanctions include \u2060an arms embargo, a travel ban and an assets freeze.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Reuters&#8211;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":37668,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"news-type":[78,26],"class_list":["post-39905","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-featured","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on leaders of armed groups operating in eastern DRC","published_date":"2026-07-17 20:22:52","news_description":"UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on leaders of armed groups operating in eastern DRC","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/39905","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/39905\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":39906,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/39905\/revisions\/39906"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/37668"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=39905"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=39905"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
