The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has wrapped up a major security and governance summit in Malawi, greenlighting a series of wide-ranging measures to tackle corruption, sluggish border laws, and regional security threats.<\/p>\n

Ministers at the summit reviewed progress under the regional anti-corruption plan, which has already seen a 34% rise in prosecutions. Illicit asset recoveries are up by 44%, clawing back $268 million, while overall financial crime investigations have hit a massive $1.05 billion. To keep up the pressure, the bloc is updating its anti-corruption laws to target cyber-crime and fraud driven by artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

On the trade and tourism front, the committee pushed South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe to fast-track technical preparations for the single “UNIVISA” pilot. The unified tourist visa is aimed at cutting red tape and allowing seamless travel between the nations. However, Ministers expressed frustration that a broader open-border treaty remains stalled because it is still four signatures short of the 11 ratifications needed to become law.<\/p>\n

On regional defence, construction of the SADC Standby Force Regional Logistics Depot has reached 68% completion despite bad weather delays. Once finished, the hub will store and deploy military and aid supplies, allowing the region to respond to conflicts and climate disasters swiftly without relying on external international support.<\/p>\n
