Burnham officially took office after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, succeeding Keir Starmer, who stepped down after two years in office.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Channel Africa on the move, University of the Witwatersrand Professor of International Relations John Stremlau said Burnham inherits a challenging political and economic environment. “Andy Burnham is a very interesting choice at this stage in the United States (US) and European relationships now,” Stremlau said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Stremlau noted that Burnham becomes Britain’s sixth prime minister in a decade, underscoring the political volatility that has characterised United Kingdom politics in recent years.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
One of Burnham’s first policy announcements was a commitment to cut value-added tax on energy bills in an effort to ease pressure on households struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
According to Stremlau, responding to economic concerns is necessary, but the new government faces significant financial constraints. “He’s right in responding to the voter interests in cutting taxes, but he’s stretched thin, to say the least, on his budgets that are now increasingly oriented toward defence,” Stremlau said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Stremlau said international developments, including the war in Ukraine and uncertainty around US foreign policy, are likely to place additional pressure on Britain’s finances. “He’s got a Ukraine war on his hands, and Donald Trump is not being terribly helpful,” Stremlau said.<\/p>\n

Burnham has also appointed John Healey as Chancellor, while several senior positions have gone to politicians from northern England.<\/p>\n

Asked about the composition of the new administration, Stremlau said the inclusion of familiar political figures reflects the continuing search for stability within British politics. “The old faces are the revolving door question of the six prime ministers in the last decade,” Stremlau said.<\/p>\n

Stremlau expressed hope that Burnham would be able to provide greater political stability at a time when political movements across Europe are becoming increasingly fragmented.<\/p>\n

Stremlau also highlighted foreign policy as one of the biggest tests facing the new prime minister.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Particular attention is focused on Britain’s relationship with the US and whether Burnham would permit the use of British military facilities in support of potential military action against Iran. “I expect that Trump will pressure Burnham to allow the US to continue to use British military bases,” Stremlau said.<\/p>\n

Stremlau argued that any escalation involving Iran could have wider consequences beyond Europe and the Middle East. “Africa is not favourable toward the US attempts to kill leaders in Iran and disrupt the Strait of Hormuz,” Stremlau said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
According to Stremlau, instability in the Gulf region could have significant economic consequences for African countries through its impact on energy markets and global trade.<\/p>\n
