Lobby group AfriForum in South Africa (SA) has requested details, in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), regarding Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie’s trip to the 2026 FIFA Soccer World Cup in North America.<\/p>\n
The request, which was submitted to the department on Tuesday, comes amid widespread controversy over reports that nearly R31 million ($1.8 million) was spent on an 18-member delegation.<\/p>\n
AfriForum’s Head of Public Relations, Ernst van Zyl says, “The documents that AfriForum has requested are all the financial documents, the proof of what was paid and what expenses were incurred during this trip to the United States. Basically, all the documents that have not yet been provided regarding what would prove how much money was spent. When it comes to the PAIA application specifically, the department has 30 days to respond and, after that, if nothing happens, AfriForum will consult with our legal team on the next legal steps to obtain that information.”<\/p>\n
