{"id":40476,"date":"2026-07-24T10:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=40476"},"modified":"2026-07-24T10:15:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:15:42","slug":"un-supports-ecowas-decision-to-refer-sa-migration-issues-to-au","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/un-supports-ecowas-decision-to-refer-sa-migration-issues-to-au\/","title":{"rendered":"UN supports ECOWAS decision to refer SA migration issues to AU"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">The United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has welcomed a decision by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to refer issues around undocumented migration in South Africa (SA) to the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"x_ms-outlook-mobile-signature\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Speaking exclusively to SABC News, Mohammed called the developments around migration on the continent, and in SA in particular, emotional and painful.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She says, \u201cThis is very emotional; it\u2019s full of a lot of pain. It is to many, forgetting that as brothers and sisters, we leaned into the fight against apartheid. So people thought of the solidarity, and you know, is this the dividend for that investment? I think perhaps a lack of recognition that there\u2019s a lot of pain and emotion in this, and you\u2019ve got to deal with that, but you can get to the table, and you can begin to find a permanent solution to migration, to xenophobia, whatever we want to call it. It has to come to an end.
