{"id":40862,"date":"2026-07-28T11:21:56","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T09:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=40862"},"modified":"2026-07-28T11:21:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T09:21:56","slug":"kenya-pushes-energy-access-plan-under-mission-300","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/kenya-pushes-energy-access-plan-under-mission-300\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya pushes energy access plan under Mission 300"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank (AfDB) convened a two-day Compact Implementation Support Workshop to turn Kenya\u2019s Mission 300 National Energy Compact into a practical delivery plan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workshop, held earlier this month, was facilitated by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and brought together government institutions, development partners, private-sector representatives and Kenya\u2019s Compact Delivery and Monitoring Unit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mission 300 is a joint initiative of AfDB and the World Bank, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, SEforALL and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet. The initiative aims to connect an additional 300 million people in Africa to electricity by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kenya\u2019s compact seeks to increase electricity access from 75% to 100%, achieve universal access to clean cooking, expand renewable energy capacity from 2.627 MW to 5.952 MW and develop an additional 8 000 km of transmission lines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The plan also aims to mobilise greater private-sector investment across the energy sector.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workshop focused on developing Kenya\u2019s Compact Implementation Support Document, a country-owned tool that translates compact commitments into priority reforms, institutional responsibilities, financing needs, technical assistance requirements, monitoring systems and risk-mitigation measures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kenya Ministry of Energy and Petroleum Secretary for Renewable Energy Isaac Kiva said the compact provides a clear path towards implementation. \u201cKenya has made significant strides in expanding energy access and through the National Energy Compact we have outlined our commitment towards universal access,\u201d Kiva said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kiva said the implementation support document provides a sequenced roadmap for reforms, investment, coordination and monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>AfDB Director for Energy Financial Solutions Wale Shonibare said delivery will determine the success of Mission 300. \u201cThe success of Mission 300 will be measured not only by the commitments we make, but by the results we deliver,\u201d Shonibare said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shonibare said the workshop marks an important step in converting Kenya\u2019s compact into a practical implementation roadmap.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AfDB is proud to support this process and will continue working with the Government of Kenya and our partners to accelerate reforms, unlock investment and deliver sustainable energy access,\u201d Shonibare said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Participants reviewed implementation bottlenecks, financing needs, reform actions, technical assistance requirements and Kenya\u2019s evolving project pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workshop also noted progress since Kenya launched the compact in 2025, including advisory services for hydropower and transmission projects, support for competitive solar and wind auctions, and the establishment of Kenya\u2019s Country Platform to convert development priorities into investable projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ten priority reform actions were identified as key measures to accelerate implementation, strengthen policy and regulatory conditions, and unlock investment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Kenya workshop is the first in a planned series of Mission 300 national workshops, with similar engagements expected in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Senegal, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire and Botswana.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;AfDB\/ChannelAfrica&#8211;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":40863,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"news-type":[44],"class_list":["post-40862","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-finance","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"Kenya is moving to accelerate universal energy access by 2030 through reforms, investment planning and stronger coordination under Mission 300.","published_date":"","news_description":"Kenya is moving to accelerate universal energy access by 2030 through reforms, investment planning and stronger coordination under Mission 300.","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/40862","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/40862\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":40864,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/40862\/revisions\/40864"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/40863"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=40862"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=40862"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
