{"id":41133,"date":"2026-07-30T16:07:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T14:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=41133"},"modified":"2026-07-30T16:13:35","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T14:13:35","slug":"out-of-favour-india-batter-rahane-quits-international-cricket","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/out-of-favour-india-batter-rahane-quits-international-cricket\/","title":{"rendered":"Out-of-favour India batter Rahane quits international cricket"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">Middle-order batter Ajinkya Rahane, who served as India\u2019s stand-in test captain on several occasions, announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday, ending his pursuit of a recall to the test side.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"x_ms-outlook-mobile-signature\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Mumbai batter made his India debut in a Twenty20 International in 2011 but established himself in test cricket as a resolute middle-order player, building his game on defence and patience.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe reality of life is that everything has a beginning and everything has an end,\u201d the 38-year-old said in a video on social media.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen that time comes, you simply have to respect it and move forward. I\u2019ve always relied on timing in my batting, and I\u2019ve always understood its importance.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cToday, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Rahane played the last of his 85 tests in July 2023, before falling out of the side. He had not played white-ball cricket for India since 2018.<\/div>\n<div>He scored 5077 test runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 hundreds.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As stand-in captain for Virat Kohli, Rahane led India to a memorable 2-1 series victory in Australia in 2020-21.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>With Kohli on paternity leave and India reeling after being bowled out for 36 in the Adelaide opener, Rahane\u2019s masterful hundred in Melbourne helped level the series and set the tone for a remarkable comeback.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Rahane also led India in tests against Australia, Afghanistan and New Zealand.
