{"id":41174,"date":"2026-07-30T19:55:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T17:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=41174"},"modified":"2026-07-30T19:55:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T17:55:07","slug":"au-executive-council-defers-migration-debate-ahead-of-mid-term-review","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/au-executive-council-defers-migration-debate-ahead-of-mid-term-review\/","title":{"rendered":"AU executive council defers migration debate ahead of mid-term review"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>South Africa&#8217;s Department of International Relations and Co-operation says the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU)\u00a0 Executive Council has decided not to discuss migration at the upcoming AU Mid-Year Review Meeting.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Pretoria says it continues to support the African Union&#8217;s long-standing decision to convene a continent-wide conference on migration.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The 25th AU Assembly, held in Johannesburg in 2015, called for an African migration conference to consider ways to accelerate mobility and development across the continent while addressing the challenges of irregular migration.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola says, &#8220;We engaged with the Chairperson, and we were very clear that, if the debate does take place, it must be in line with the 2015 resolution for a comprehensive discussion on migration. We need to examine both the push and pull factors of migration. If the discussion focuses only on South Africa, it places the country in a position where it has to defend itself.
