The Pan African Parliament\u00a0(PAP)\u00a0has urged the South African (SA) government to strengthen measures to prevent and eliminate xenophobic violence against African nationals residing in the country.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Members discussed a motion on the escalating afrophobic attacks at the First Ordinary Session of the Seventh Legislature in Midrand, Gauteng Province, in the country’s Gauteng Province.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u00a0SA has seen a series of anti-immigration protests in several major cities since March 2006 on June 30.<\/div>\n

The anti-migrant protests broke out across the country following weeks of rising tension over immigration and refugees.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Groups such as March and March, and Operation Dudula were advocating stricter enforcement against undocumented migration. This is what led to the motion by the Pan African Parliament.<\/div>\n

Kenyan member of Parliament Dr Danson Mungatana says the parliament cannot remain silent while Africans become unsafe in another African country.<\/p>\n

“This Parliament calls for the strengthening of early warning and rapid response mechanisms involving national, provincial, and local authorities to identify and escalate tensions before any result in violence. So, we as Africans, as already stated, we contributed to the realisation of the dreams of the African people who are living in this country before their independence.”<\/p>\n

The Second Vice President of the PAP Dr. Zanetor Agyeman- Rawlings says all the members in the house are speaking with one voice.<\/p>\n

“We must distinguish between criminality and policies to support the country’s citizens. Every member here has spoken in support of the sovereignty of the Republic of SA, and no one has pointed fingers at the state. However, the members here are the voices of millions of Africans across the continent. and have condemned the criminality and are simply requesting that the government of SA take further steps to ensure law and order and the protection of fundamental human rights as stated in the Maputo Protocol to which SA has ratified and is a signatory. As Africans, we must not allow elements within or without to take advantage of sentiments to push their own agenda, which will only result in a lose-lose for all of us.”<\/p>\n

Member of the SA Parliament Mdumiseni Ntuli, says SA remains committed to the rule of law and the protection of foreign nationals despite rising tensions.<\/p><\/div>\n

“First and foremost, I just want to state categorically that SA citizens are not xenophobic. This is a narrative. It is not a proven fact or a truth, and we’ll explain that. Secondly, and I must indicate that as I speak to you here, I’m speaking to you as fellow Africans, but also as a Pan-African as myself. During the meeting of the African Union (AU) Executive Council in Addis Ababa a few weeks ago, some of you may be aware that the Republic of Ghana made a proposal that this matter must be placed on the agenda of the AU summit later this year, a proposal that was correctly opposed and objected by both SA and Zimbabwe. Our Ministers in the Southern region support SA’s effort and are working together to find a solution to this problem. We must be careful as members of Parliament not to make statements in this house which can further divide Africans. while we are claiming to be acting in the best interest of our countries and the African continent.”<\/p>\n

Members says they are deeply concerned by the recurring incidence of afrophobic \u00a0violence and the loss of life affecting Africa nationals in SA and have called on member states of the African Union to continue co-operating with SA in addressing migration challenges.<\/p><\/div>\n
