Diesel users in South Africa (SA) will be paying more to fill up their cars, while petrol motorists will get some relief for the month of August.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Businesses that rely on diesel-powered transport, will however face significantly higher fuel costs.<\/p>\n

This will add further pressure to operating expenses and the cost of living in the SA.<\/p>\n

SA Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced that the latest adjustment is attributed to among others, the impact of renewed United States and Iran tensions which caused the price to increase to a $100 mark.<\/p>\n

The increase was also offset by the fact that the prices had already decreased significantly the previous month and the first half of this month due to the ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, Spokesperson at the Motor Industry Staff Association\u00a0(MISA), says organisation has cautiously welcomed the reduction in the petrol price announced by the Minister, but says the hike will hurt the poor.<\/p>\n

“Petrol relief is welcome, but diesel and paraffin hike will hurt the poor and threaten food prices.”<\/p>\n

Hlubi-Majola says the rise in diesel will have a negative impact on the food prices, calling on government to find ways to cushion the economy from this impact.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Director and Chief and Economist at Econometrix, Dr Azar Jammine says the increase and decrease creates an interesting potential impact in the short term.<\/p>\n

“The fact that petrol prices are coming down but diesel prices are increasing, creates an interesting potential impact in the short term. The fact is that most consumers use petrol rather than diesel, so the reduction in fuel prices will have some benefit to them. At the same time, the 52 cent per litre reduction is nowhere near as great as some of the other movements in petrol prices that we’ve seen in the last few months. But at the margin, it will be of benefit to consumers. On the other hand, the big increase in diesel costs will obviously impact on the 20% or so consumers whose vehicles use diesel rather than petrol.<\/p>\n

Jammine says if the SA still had its six refineries, there would be less reliance on imported refined fuel.<\/p>\n

“The disappointing aspect is that SA used to have six fuel refineries. We now only have two operating largely because of government mismanagement and the net effect of this is that we are far more dependent upon imports of refined fuel and therefore more vulnerable to these oil price changes than we used to be.”<\/p>\n
