As South Africa (SA) observes National Women’s Day, some women believe that true inclusivity and gender equality cannot be fully achieved without sustained economic growth.<\/p>\n
This year’s commemoration is held under the theme, “Empowered Women Empower the Nation.” Currently, SA’s unemployment rate stands at 32.7%, with women making up the largest share of the unemployed.<\/p>\n
Kumba Iron Ore Chief Executive Officer Nompumelelo Zikalala says for more opportunities to be created, especially for women, the economy needs to grow.<\/p>\n
“”We need to realize that we’ll never get to where we need to get to if we don’t grow the economy of our country and if we don’t grow it in a manner that makes sure that that growth creates equal opportunities for everybody. There’s one thing about taking the cake and cutting it into smaller pieces. You can only do so much. What we need to do is to grow the economy and actually make sure that we’ve got more opportunities that become available for all South Africans, but especially for more females.”<\/p>\n
