{"id":42000,"date":"2026-08-10T09:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T07:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=42000"},"modified":"2026-08-10T09:15:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T07:15:00","slug":"cameroon-qualify-for-womens-world-cup-after-ending-nigerias-wafcon-reign","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/cameroon-qualify-for-womens-world-cup-after-ending-nigerias-wafcon-reign\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameroon qualify for Women&#8217;s World Cup after ending Nigeria&#8217;s WAFCON reign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cameroon ended Nigeria&#8217;s reign as Women\u2019s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champions with a shock 1-0 \u200bwin in the quarter-finals, with teenager Myriam \u200cNyadjou&#8217;s superb long-range free kick also earning them a place at next year\u2019s Women\u2019s World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Cameroon join Algeria and \u200bMorocco as African representatives in the field for \u200bthe tournament in Brazil after 19-year-old Nyadjou fired \u2060home a powerful shot into the corner in \u200bthe 19th minute.<\/p>\n<p>WAFCON in Morocco serves as the \u200bqualifiers for the World Cup with the four quarter-final winners all advancing directly to the 32-team finals from June 24 to \u200bJuly 25, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria qualified for all nine previous \u200bWomen\u2019s World Cup finals but now have to try and \u200cgain \u2060entry through a complicated play-off route that offers Africa the possibility of two more representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Ten-times champions Nigeria&#8217;s defeat guarantees a new WAFCON winner next week. Equatorial \u200bGuinea, who did \u200bnot qualify \u2060for this year&#8217;s 16-team tournament, and South Africa, who lost 2-1 to hosts \u200bMorocco on Saturday, are the only \u200bother countries \u2060to have previously won the African title.<\/p>\n<p>Later on Sunday, Ghana and Malawi meet in Rabat in the \u2060last \u200bquarter-final.
