{"id":42107,"date":"2026-08-11T08:29:48","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T06:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=42107"},"modified":"2026-08-11T08:29:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T06:29:48","slug":"libyas-noc-warns-of-force-majeure-zawiya-refinery-shutdown-if-drone-attacks-continue","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/libyas-noc-warns-of-force-majeure-zawiya-refinery-shutdown-if-drone-attacks-continue\/","title":{"rendered":"Libya&#8217;s NOC warns of force majeure, Zawiya refinery shutdown if drone attacks continue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Libya&#8217;s National Oil Corporation (NOC) said \u200bon Tuesday it could declare force majeure and completely halt operations at the \u200cZawiya refinery if drone attacks on oil assets in the city continued, after reporting a third such attack over Sunday and Monday.<\/p>\n<p>NOC said the latest drone targeted an oil blending and filling plant \u200boperated by the Zawiya Oil Refining Company, falling near its main oil tank \u200band a pipeline network used to produce oils for the domestic market. \u2060No casualties or material damage were reported.<\/p>\n<p>There was no immediate claim of responsibility for \u200bthe attacks, and authorities did not say who they believed was behind them.<br \/>\nZawiya refinery, around \u200b40 km (25 miles) west of Tripoli, has a capacity of 120 000 barrels per day and is connected to the country&#8217;s 300 000-bpdSharara oilfield. It is currently Libya&#8217;s largest operating refinery, with Ras Lanuf out of \u200boperation.<\/p>\n<p>NOC said the latest attack was the third targeting oil assets in Zawiya over Sunday \u200band Monday.<br \/>\nOn Monday, a fire accompanied by heavy smoke broke out in a fuel tank at an \u200coil \u2060depot at the Zawiya refinery after it was struck, Brega Petroleum Marketing Company said.<br \/>\nLibya&#8217;s Oil Ministry also said on Tuesday that the tank, which belonged to Brega and contained about 4.5 million litres of gasoline, caught fire and collapsed.
