Speaking at the 46th SADC Council of Ministers Meeting ahead of the Summit of Heads of State and Government, Lamola said SA had informed member states about recent incidents and outlined measures being implemented to address the situation.<\/p>\n

“This Council, SA, also had the opportunity to brief the community on a matter that has caused much anguish and apprehension in our region,” Lamola said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Lamola said the violence had particularly affected migrants of African descent, with many victims originating from SADC member states. “Violence targeting migrants in our country, particularly of African descent, and the majority from the SADC region,” Lamola said.<\/p>\n

Lamola said SA had shared details of government interventions aimed at preventing further incidents and addressing concerns raised by neighbouring countries. “We have also taken the Council into confidence on the measures taken to address this concerning development,” Lamola said.<\/p>\n

Lamola welcomed discussions within the regional body, saying collective engagement was important in finding solutions to migration-related challenges. “SA welcomes and appreciates this region’s collective wisdom in addressing the matter,” Lamola said.<\/p>\n

Lamola said migration should be approached as a regional issue requiring cooperation among SADC member states rather than being viewed only through a national lens. “We appreciate the dialogue. We appreciate the Council that our region must take greater ownership of the migration narrative,” Lamola said.<\/p>\n
