{"id":43224,"date":"2026-08-20T07:50:53","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T05:50:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=43224"},"modified":"2026-08-20T07:50:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T05:50:53","slug":"sa-national-prosecuting-authority-criticised-over-handling-of-trc-cases","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-national-prosecuting-authority-criticised-over-handling-of-trc-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"SA National Prosecuting Authority\u00a0criticised over handling of TRC cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">South Africa&#8217;s (SA) National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has been criticised over its handling of cases stemming from the country&#8217;s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">But a Senior Prosecutor has told an inquiry that political interference and a lack of political will have also contributed to the poor record of investigating and prosecuting these cases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Doctor Jacobus Pretorius, a long-time member of the Priority Crimes Litigation Unit, was giving evidence at the TRC Cases Inquiry in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Earlier, Pretorious sought to correct what he said were \u201cmaterial inaccuracies\u201d in the testimony of anti-apartheid activist Reverend Frank Chikane.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">He challenged Chikane\u2019s previous testimony that the NPA did not follow up on information related to Project Coast, the apartheid government\u2019s chemical and biological warfare programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Additionally, he questioned the allegation that its head, Wouter Basson, was not prosecuted.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8211;ChannelAfrica&#8211;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":22531,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"news-type":[78,26],"class_list":["post-43224","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-featured","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"","published_date":"","news_description":"NPA has been criticised over its handling of TRC cases","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/43224","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/43224\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":43225,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/43224\/revisions\/43225"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/22531"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=43224"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=43224"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
