The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention have welcomed the allocation of 70 000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to support response efforts against an ongoing outbreak in the country.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The deployment was approved by the International Co-ordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision following a formal request from the Congolese Ministry of Public Health. The global stockpile managed by the ICG brings together international health bodies and operational partners, including M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res, United Nations Children’s Fund, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, with financial backing from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.<\/p>\n

Under the allocation plan, 50 000 doses will be deployed to protect healthcare workers and frontline responders serving in affected health zones, in line with guidelines established by the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation.<\/p>\n

The remaining 20 000 doses will be allocated to a Phase 3 clinical trial aimed at evaluating the vaccine\u2019s effectiveness against the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain currently circulating in eastern DRC.<\/p>\n

While Ervebo is officially licensed and proven effective against the Zaire ebolavirus strain, its protective capabilities against the Bundibugyo species in human populations have not yet been established. Early laboratory and animal testing suggests potential cross-protection, making the upcoming trial essential for generating reliable clinical data to inform future outbreak responses.<\/p>\n

Health authorities confirmed that all individuals receiving the vaccine or taking part in the trial will be fully informed of its scope, potential benefits, and limitations, ensuring all doses are administered strictly under informed consent.<\/p>\n
