Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Electricidade de Mo\u00e7ambique (EDM) Joaquim Henriques Ou-Chim said the 218-kilometre transmission line has already been energised and is currently undergoing testing. “The line has already been energised; it is now in the testing period and we count on the fact that this month it may start commercial operation. But technically it is in a testing period to check its operation,” Ou-Chim said.<\/p>\n

Ou-Chim said testing started two weeks ago and is expected to continue for at least another week, although the process could be extended if any technical anomalies are identified.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The commercial operations phase marks the final stage of the project, allowing electricity to be transmitted regularly to consumers following the successful completion of testing, commissioning and technical validation.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The interconnector was officially commissioned this month and links Malawi’s electricity grid to the SAPP for the first time.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The project will allow the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi to initially import 50MW of electricity from Electricidade de Mo\u00e7ambique, with future imports expected to increase to between 100MW and 200MW.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The transmission line is expected to help Malawi reduce reliance on domestic hydropower generation, which has been vulnerable to drought conditions and has contributed to persistent electricity shortages and blackouts.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
As Malawi’s first international power interconnector, the project is also expected to strengthen regional energy integration and improve electricity security.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The project has received support from several development partners, including the World Bank’s International Development Association, the European Union, Germany’s KfW Development Bank, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund and regional utility companies.<\/p>\n
