<\/p>\n
The funding, announced by Education Cannot Wait, the United Nations’ (UN) global fund for education in emergencies, will target West Darfur, South Kordofan and Gedaref, where conflict and displacement have severely disrupted schooling.<\/p>\n

The three-year programme is aimed at restoring safe and inclusive education for children affected by what the UN describes as the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crisis.<\/p>\n

Director of Education Cannot Wait Maysa Jalbout said education remains a critical component of humanitarian response efforts. “This investment is about much more than reopening classrooms. It is about supporting children to regain a sense of safety and normalcy while strengthening education systems that can continue serving communities through crisis and into recovery,” Jalbout said.<\/p>\n

Since fighting erupted between rival military factions in April 2023, about 14 million people have been displaced, and 33.7 million people now require humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n

According to Education Cannot Wait, at least eight million children, nearly half of Sudan’s 17 million school-age children, remain out of school. “Across the country, large numbers of schools remain non-operational, while millions of children have endured prolonged disruptions to their education, with some missing nearly 500 days of learning,” the organisation said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The programme will focus on internally displaced children, refugees and vulnerable host communities. At least 60% of beneficiaries will be girls and 10% children with disabilities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The initiative will create safe learning spaces, provide mental health and psychosocial support, strengthen teacher training, improve access to learning materials and address barriers faced by girls and children with disabilities.<\/p>\n

The programme will be implemented by Save the Children, working with Plan International, LM International, Alsalam Organisation for Relief and Development and Sadagaat.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The announcement comes amid worsening educational challenges across Sudan.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
According to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), 81% of schools in Darfur remain closed, while about 70% of children in the region are not attending school. Around 5.8% of schools are currently being used as shelters for displaced people.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
UNICEF has also reported attacks on schools during the conflict.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Education Cannot Wait noted that Sudan reflects a broader global crisis in education, with 258 million school-age children and adolescents affected by disrupted learning worldwide. Of those, 93 million are completely out of school.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The fund is also using the announcement to support its global Hope Starts Here campaign, which aims to raise $600 million to help 10 million children whose education has been disrupted by conflict and humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n
