{"id":44153,"date":"2026-08-30T16:36:48","date_gmt":"2026-08-30T14:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=44153"},"modified":"2026-08-30T16:36:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T14:36:48","slug":"libya-rivals-agree-roadmap-for-elections-within-24-months-at-un-led-talks","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/libya-rivals-agree-roadmap-for-elections-within-24-months-at-un-led-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"Libya rivals agree roadmap for elections within 24 months at UN-led talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Representatives of Libya&#8217;s rival political parties this Sunday signed an agreement on holding long-delayed national elections within two years to resolve contentious issues over \u200celectoral laws and reform the national elections body.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The political process to resolve more than a decade of conflict in Libya has been stalled since an election scheduled for December 2021 collapsed following disputes over the eligibility of the main candidates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s signing ceremony was held at the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, (UNSMIL), in the \u2060Libyan capital Tripoli.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It followed talks in a smaller format, known as the 4+4, that involved two representatives of each of Libya&#8217;s four main institutions: the Government of National Unity, the High Council of State, the House of Representatives and the Libyan National Army.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Walid Ellafi, state Minister of Political Affairs and Communications in the Government of National Unity, said legislative and presidential elections should be held &#8220;within a period not exceeding 24 months&#8221; under a single executive authority and unified national institutions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shibani AbuHamoud, Head of the Army&#8217;s General Command delegation, \u200csaid \u2060the 4+4 would work with UNSMIL &#8220;to develop a framework within one month of the signing of the agreement to follow up on all matters related to its implementation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The agreement says that if Libya&#8217;s House of Representatives and High Council of State fail to approve the deal within a month, \u2060the parties will seek to adopt it nationally as a constitutional document through broad national mechanisms and secure international backing through the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Libya has had little stability or security since a \u20602011 NATO-backed uprising.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It split in 2014 between warring eastern and western factions but there has been little major warfare since a 2020 ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All Libya&#8217;s major political players have repeatedly \u2060called for elections, but many Libyan people have voiced doubts that they would want a vote that could push most of them from positions of authority.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Reuters&#8211;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":44154,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"news-type":[26],"class_list":["post-44153","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"Libyan rivals agree to elections within two years","published_date":"2026-08-30 16:22:21","news_description":"Libyan rivals agree to elections within two years","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44153","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44153\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":44155,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44153\/revisions\/44155"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/44154"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44153"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=44153"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
