Newly sworn-in Tanzanian Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi is facing criticism over his strong corporate ties, with analysts dismissing claims that his appointment represents a genuine outreach to the nation’s youth.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Rise and Shine, Policy and Political Analyst Deus Kibamba challenged President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s framing of the 43-year-old former Energy Minister as a representative of younger generations, pointing instead to Ndejembi’s connections to major ruling party donors.<\/p>\n

“Ndejembi, youthful as he may seem, is quite not connected to any youthful groupings and movements here in Tanzania,” said Kibamba, who serves as Executive Director at the Tanzania Citizens’ Information Bureau. “I think what is quite evident is that he is quite connected to the companies. I can see that the companies are actually celebrating having succeeded to advocate for Ndejembi’s entry into the Presidency.”<\/p>\n

Kibamba specifically highlighted Ndejembi’s past association with GSM, a prominent corporate entity that contributed 10 billion Tanzanian Shillings ($3.85 million) to the governing Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party during the last election cycle.<\/p>\n

The leadership change comes after Parliament unanimously endorsed Ndejembi with all 324 participating lawmakers voting in his favor on Saturday. He fills the vacancy left by Emmanuel Nshimbi, whose sudden resignation and subsequent expulsion from the ruling party followed his internal calls for electoral and constitutional reforms.<\/p>\n

Under the Tanzanian constitution, Ndejembi’s swearing-in puts him directly in line to succeed the Presidency should the office become vacant before the next scheduled elections in 2030.<\/p>\n
