Ramaphosa met Eskom Board Chairperson Mteto Nyati on August 27, 2026, to discuss the restructuring of the electricity sector and concerns raised by the Eskom Board.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Ramaphosa reiterated the SA government\u2019s commitment to establish a fully independent Transmission System Operator (TSO) with ownership and control of transmission assets.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The proposed TSO is expected to create equal access to the electricity transmission network, increase competition and unlock private investment in SA\u2019s energy sector.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Ramaphosa emphasised that the TSO would remain state-owned and operate as a strategic national asset serving the public interest.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Eskom Restructuring Task Team (ERTT) is developing the implementation process. ERTT members include representatives from The Presidency, National Treasury, the Department of Electricity and Energy, Eskom and the National Transmission Company SA (NTCSA).<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Nyati raised concerns about the potential effect of the reforms on Eskom\u2019s financial position and the ability of the transmission operator to fund network expansion.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Ramaphosa said the SA government would continue working with Eskom, NTCSA and other stakeholders to protect Eskom\u2019s financial position during the restructuring process.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The reform programme must also enable the TSO to invest in expanding and strengthening SA\u2019s transmission network. Government plans to engage lenders and other funders transparently throughout the process.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Nyati confirmed the Eskom Board\u2019s support for the policy direction adopted by the SA government. Nyati also committed the Board to maintaining alignment with the government as Eskom\u2019s shareholder during implementation.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The meeting followed a recent engagement between Ramaphosa and the leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Presidency said both engagements formed part of Ramaphosa\u2019s commitment to consult affected stakeholders throughout the restructuring process.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
SA\u2019s energy reforms include restructuring Eskom and establishing an independent transmission operator to support competition among electricity producers. Additional transmission capacity is required to connect new generation projects to the national grid and meet growing electricity demand.<\/p>\n
