{"id":44262,"date":"2026-09-01T08:37:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T06:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=44262"},"modified":"2026-09-01T08:37:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T06:37:11","slug":"new-council-to-co-ordinate-sas-gbv-femicide-response","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/new-council-to-co-ordinate-sas-gbv-femicide-response\/","title":{"rendered":"New Council to co-ordinate SA\u2019s GBV, Femicide response"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"x_aboveBlackLine\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Following the end of Women&#8217;s Month in South Africa (SA) on Monday, the government says a new national council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) will co-ordinate the country&#8217;s response to the crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, says the National Council on GBVF\u00a0will bring together different sectors to coordinate efforts to tackle\u00a0GBVF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">She was briefing journalists in Pretoria, Gauteng, Province, on progress in establishing the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Human Science Research council&#8217;s first SA national GBVF study indicates that approximately 7.3 million women have experienced physical violence during their lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The study found that the prevalence of sexual violence by a lifetime partner is twice as high for women with disabilities compared to those without.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">In 2025, the government classified GBVF as a national disaster as the threat to women&#8217;s life and safety has become persistent and systemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Council is made up of representatives from various sectors including survivors, women movement, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and government to eradicate GBVF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Speaking at the briefing, Chikunga, says the Council&#8217;s role is to ensure that SA&#8217;s response to GBVF is coherent, impactful and promote accountability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8211;Thuto Ngobeni\/ ChannelAfrca&#8211;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":15753,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"news-type":[78,26],"class_list":["post-44262","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-featured","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"","published_date":"","news_description":"","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44262","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44262\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":44263,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44262\/revisions\/44263"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/15753"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44262"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=44262"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
