{"id":44364,"date":"2026-09-02T08:19:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T06:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=44364"},"modified":"2026-09-02T08:19:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T06:19:09","slug":"court-to-hear-sa-presidents-bid-to-set-aside-section-89-report","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/court-to-hear-sa-presidents-bid-to-set-aside-section-89-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Court to hear SA President\u2019s bid to set aside Section 89 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>South Africa&#8217;s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s application to set aside the Section 89 independent panel report on the Phala Phala saga will be heard in the Western Cape High Court this Wednesday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The report found that there was strong evidence that Ramaphosa may have violated his oath of office regarding the theft of $580,000 in cash from his Phala-Phala farm in Bela-Bela, Limpopo province.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The National Assembly voted against the report in December 2022.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Some opposition parties then took the matter to the Constitutional Court.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The apex court invalidated Parliament\u2019s decision to vote against implementing the report and ordered the establishment of an Impeachment Committee to institute proceedings against the President.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In July, the Western Cape High Court ruled in favour of Ramaphosa, who had applied for the temporary halting of the committee\u2019s proceedings pending the ruling on his application to review the report.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8211;SABC&#8211;<\/div>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":40009,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"news-type":[78,26],"class_list":["post-44364","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-featured","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"The National Assembly voted against the report in December 2022.","published_date":"","news_description":"The National Assembly voted against the report in December 2022.","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44364","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44364\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":44365,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/44364\/revisions\/44365"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/40009"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44364"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=44364"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
