{"id":44610,"date":"2026-09-04T10:29:29","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T08:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=44610"},"modified":"2026-09-04T10:29:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T08:29:29","slug":"study-finds-broad-tolerance-but-strict-immigration-views-across-africa","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/study-finds-broad-tolerance-but-strict-immigration-views-across-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds broad tolerance but strict immigration views across Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While a vast majority of Africans express strong tolerance for ethnic, religious, and political differences, growing anxieties over immigration and deep skepticism toward public institutions are straining social cohesion across the continent, according to a report published by research network Afrobarometer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on data from 50 961 interviews across 38 countries in Afrobarometer&#8217;s Round 10 survey, the report, titled &#8220;Social Cohesion in Africa: Bonds, Belonging, and the Common Good&#8221;, reveals a continent defined by high social tolerance but sharp limits on inclusion. While over 80% of respondents said they would accept neighbours of a different ethnicity or religion, 64% favored restricting foreign job seekers, and 70% backed limits on accepting refugees.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The research also highlighted a profound erosion of trust in state organs.
