Cameroon’s Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Professor Marie Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Abena Ondoa, has launched a three-month national campaign against femicide, calling for unyielding prosecution as official figures reveal that more than 120 women have been killed by intimate partners since January.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch in Yaound\u00e9, Abena Ondoa declared that government figures, which peaked in October with 10 women killed in an eight-day span, represent only the tip of the iceberg in an escalating national crisis. Joined by a coalition of government Ministers, civil society leaders, traditional rulers, and the clergy, Abena Ondoa announced a shift toward early prevention, reporting, and strict legal punishment.<\/p>\n

“Perpetrators of feminicide and all those who support them in any way are criminals, wherever they are, and whoever they are, they deserve to be hunted and punished mercilessly as far as law is concerned,” Abena Ondoa said. “The government says stop to this barbaric acts from another era. I would like to reiterate to all women and girls of our country the determination of the government to put an end to this human butchery.”<\/p>\n

Addressing the root causes, civil society leader Mbacham Mirabel Ekembe, Founder and Executive Director of Goodwill Ambassadors of Cameroon, emphasised the vital role of men in driving systemic change.<\/p>\n

“Why we think that it is important to bring men into this work is that we believe that men are the perpetrators of femicide,” Ekembe said. “When they see men on the front line, they begin to speak volume to them. We intend to move the conversation from awareness to action towards a Cameroon where women and girls can live free from fear, violence, and femicide.”<\/p>\n
