Cross-border trade between Malawi and Mozambique has received a significant boost following joint capacity-building initiatives led by the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC) Tripartite to roll out the Tripartite Simplified Trade Regime (TSTR).<\/p>\n

The trade facilitation drive focused on key commercial border crossings linking the two Southern African nations, including the Chiponde\u2013Mandimba posts linking Malawi’s Mangochi District with Niassa Province in Mozambique, as well as the Dedza\u2013Calomue posts connecting Dedza District with Tete Province.<\/p>\n

The program brought together customs officials, revenue authorities, security personnel, and cross-border traders, the majority of whom are women and youth, to streamline customs procedures and lower transactional costs for small-scale commerce.<\/p>\n

Supported by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, the TSTR framework aims to formalise small-scale cross-border trade by simplifying clearance documentation, standardizing product valuations, and establishing transparent duty regimes for local agricultural and commercial goods.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the economic importance of the border communities, Malawi Ministry of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism official Ovilera Phelani noted that informal and small-scale trade remains central to local livelihoods and regional food security.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“The TSTR provides an important opportunity to deepen these relations by making trade more predictable and accessible, while improving communication, information-sharing and coordination between border authorities,” Phelani stated during stakeholder consultations.<\/p>\n
