{"id":45628,"date":"2026-09-16T10:23:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T08:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=45628"},"modified":"2026-09-16T10:23:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T08:23:08","slug":"sas-iec-to-update-media-on-final-candidate-list","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sas-iec-to-update-media-on-final-candidate-list\/","title":{"rendered":"SA&#8217;s IEC to update media on final candidate list"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">South Africa&#8217;s (SA) Electoral Commission (IEC) is expected to update the media on the finalisation of the candidate list ahead of the 2026 local government elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Over 140 000 candidates had submitted their nominations to contest 10 500 municipal seats before five in the afternoon deadline on August 28.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Following the submission, the commission then embarked on reviewing the submissions for compliance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The process included checking whether candidates paid the applicable deposits, completed acceptance of nomination forms and submitted details of registered voters supporting their candidature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">This comes at a time when the African National Congress (ANC) has legally challenged the IEC over its Online Candidate Nomination System at the Electoral Court.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The ANC claims that it failed to upload one hundred and eighty-one of its candidates because they experienced difficulties with the IEC&#8217;s System and that the system&#8217;s final electronic confirmation step did not close during the final submission phase.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The IEC, on the other hand, has maintained that all candidates from political parties and independent candidates were given ample time to upload their details.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The briefing is expected to take place at the IEC&#8217;s headquarters in Centurion, Gauteng Province.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8211;SABC&#8211;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":21186,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"news-type":[26],"class_list":["post-45628","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"","published_date":"","news_description":"IEC expected to update the media on the finalisation of the candidate list","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/45628","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/45628\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":45629,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/45628\/revisions\/45629"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/21186"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=45628"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=45628"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
