The South African (SA) Rand strengthened in early trading on Thursday, supported by stable \u200bcommodity prices after the United States (US) Federal Reserve \u200craised interest rates and signalled that further monetary tightening may follow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Rand traded at 16.3050 \u200bagainst the Dollar, about 0.6% stronger than \u200bits previous close.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The US Dollar was flat \u2060against a basket of currencies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

SA’s key\u00a0\u200bexport commodities gained, with gold rising 1.2% to $4,314.64 per\u00a0\u200bounce and platinum climbing 1.9% to $1,784.42 as investors assessed the Federals’s move.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Fed raised rates by 25 basis points and \u200bsignalled more hikes, as policymakers warned that \u200binflation could worsen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“The SA Reserve Bank faces a difficult \u200cbalance. \u2060Maintaining credible inflation control could support the Rand’s yield appeal, while mechanically matching overseas increases would risk adding pressure to already subdued domestic activity,” \u200bsaid ETM \u200bAnalytics in \u2060a note.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

SA’s monetary policy committee is due to meet next week \u200bto decide on the country’s interest \u200brate \u2060path.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index was up 0.6% in early trade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

SA’s benchmark \u20602035 \u200bgovernment bond was slightly firmer \u200bin early deals, as the yield fell 3 basis points to \u200b8.71%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
