{"id":46237,"date":"2026-09-23T10:41:21","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T08:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=46237"},"modified":"2026-09-23T10:41:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T08:41:21","slug":"sa-faces-gas-cliff-as-mozambique-supplies-decline","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-faces-gas-cliff-as-mozambique-supplies-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"SA faces gas cliff as Mozambique supplies decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>South Africa\u2019s (SA) gas industry is experiencing a decline that threatens gas-to-power development and energy security.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Gas producers, infrastructure developers and industry players have described this as a gas cliff that could affect industrial production, investment, employment and the country\u2019s economic competitiveness.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They gathered for a webinar organised by the Industrial Gas Users Association of Southern Africa and the African Energy Leadership Centre at Wits Business School.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The country has over time relied on natural gas from Mozambique\u2019s Pande and Temane fields, which have been in decline.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIf you look at the short term; number one, we\u2019ve missed the boat. We are now officially in the gas cliff. It is not if it\u2019s going to come, it is how we\u2019re going to navigate that, which is going to be key. Yet the government is not engaging the private sector. We simply don\u2019t see that. And we are absolutely at pains to understand why the government is not dealing with number one, the gas cliff, but also unlocking the gas economy. The government has a role to play. They know the answers. This is not a complex solution, but there\u2019s absolutely very little coordination in this. So, we are suffering from, we\u2019re trying to solve a national issue through the private sector.
