The African Development Fund (ADF) approved the financing on September 21 for the Enhancing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Adaptation Project.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The project will be implemented by the Eritrean government in coordination with the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF).<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Funding will come from the Climate Action Window, a specialised mechanism of the ADF, the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group\u2019s concessional financing arm for low-income and transitional countries.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The project aims to reduce the distance communities travel to collect drinking water from about five kilometres to approximately 500 metres.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThe project will enable communities to reduce the long distances they have to travel to access drinking water by a factor of 10, bringing it down to around 500 metres,\u201d AfDB Group Water and Sanitation Department Director Mtchera Johannes Chirwa said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The programme will finance 21 complete rural water supply systems and rehabilitate or modernise 38 rural systems that are currently not functioning.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Water, sanitation and hygiene facilities will also be upgraded at 10 health centres and 12 schools. \u201cRegarding sanitation, it will help to improve WASH facilities in health centres and schools,\u201d Chirwa said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The project will include the construction of boreholes, installation of rural water networks and modernisation of existing systems.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Retention dams, earthworks and tree planting will be introduced in water catchment areas to improve the sustainability of supplies and reduce vulnerability to climate-related disruption.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The project will also strengthen climate knowledge and develop institutional and human capacity to manage water resources and infrastructure. \u201cBy strengthening communities\u2019 resilience to climate shocks, the project aims to make a decisive contribution to social stability and to stimulate economic development by tackling environmental and socioeconomic vulnerabilities,\u201d Chirwa said.<\/p>\n
