{"id":46349,"date":"2026-09-24T08:29:43","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T06:29:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=46349"},"modified":"2026-09-24T08:31:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T06:31:32","slug":"sudan-rejects-us-remarks-questioning-government-legitimacy","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sudan-rejects-us-remarks-questioning-government-legitimacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Sudan rejects US remarks questioning government legitimacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Sudan on Wednesday said it &#8220;upholds its national sovereignty&#8221; and called on Washington to engage positively with the African country&#8217;s government, pushing back \u200bon remarks by the United States (US) Department calling into question its legitimacy.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">The \u200cUS withheld a visa for Sudanese army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan ahead of his scheduled visit to New York for the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations, making his attendance contingent on \u200bhis agreeing to a 90-day ceasefire, sources told <i>Reuters.<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Sudan&#8217;s war, which erupted in \u200bApril 2023 following a power struggle between the military and the \u2060Rapid Support Forces, has displaced more than 14 million people and created one of \u200bthe world&#8217;s worst humanitarian crises.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">US State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement \u200bon Tuesday that neither the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary nor either of their respective leaders &#8220;represent legitimate, constitutional governance for Sudan.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">In a statement on Wednesday, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign \u200bAffairs and International Co-operation said it strongly rejected the statement and called on Washington \u200bto engage positively with the Sudanese government.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">&#8220;The government of Sudan emphasises that any peace initiative intended to \u200csucceed \u2060and endure must be grounded in respect for Sudan\u2019s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and legitimate national institutions,&#8221; the statement said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">&#8220;It must also address the root causes of the war&#8217;s continuation foremost among them, negative foreign interference.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday \u200bdescribed trying to mediate \u200ban end to \u2060the conflict in Sudan as frustrating.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">&#8220;We\u2019ve had people agree to things, sign to things, and the commitments are never met,&#8221; he told \u200breporters in New York. &#8220;Every time it seems like we\u2019re on \u200bthe verge \u2060of making progress, one side or the other will back off because they think they\u2019re winning or they think they could win.
